Collection: Original Abstract Oil Paintings by Laurie Rubell

Original Abstract Oil Paintings by Laurie Rubell

Explore original abstract oil paintings by Laurie Rubell. This collection brings together one-of-a-kind works that explore color, line, space and movement. You’ll find abstract figures, landscapes and paintings that span two canvases.

Painting with Color and Movement

I paint intuitively, without preliminary sketches. First, I begin working directly on the canvas. Then, I let each painting change and grow as I work.

Layers of oil color, drips and thousands of brushstrokes build depth across the surface. In addition, expressive lines guide the eye through the painting.

Color plays a central role in my work. For example, I use thin layers to let the colors beneath show through. Elsewhere, bold areas of paint create a stronger contrast.

I also work with more than fifty types and styles of artist brushes and a wide range of professional oil colors. These tools help me vary my marks and explore new ways to move paint across the canvas.

Figures and Landscape Elements

Abstract forms often blend with hints of figures, landscapes and shapes from nature. As I paint, these forms may appear, fade or merge with nearby colors.

As a result, each viewer may notice something different. A shape might suggest a figure, while another area brings a landscape to mind.

Two-Canvas Oil Paintings

Many of my paintings extend across two canvases. These works, also known as diptychs, allow color, line and imagery to flow from one panel to the next.

Although I paint the canvases as one composition, you can also display many of them separately. In this way, the space between the panels becomes part of how you experience the artwork.

One-of-a-Kind Artwork

Every painting in this collection is an original oil painting. In other words, I do not make prints, copies or limited editions. I also sign and date each work on the back.
