Dawn of the Liquid Sky is an original abstract oil painting by Laurie Rubell, created across two hand-stretched canvases that come together to form one unified composition.

Measuring 58” wide × 40” high, this colorful diptych is filled with layered movement, sweeping lines and wave-like forms. Shapes move across the two canvases and extend toward the edges, creating a sense of landscape, atmosphere and continuous motion.

I often paint across multiple canvases to explore both the inside and outside of the edges. Although Dawn of the Liquid Sky was designed to be displayed as one composition, the two canvases can also be separated for a different presentation.

I created this painting intuitively, without preliminary sketches. Many thin layers of oil paint were gradually built across the surface using a wide variety of brushes and colors. The entire painting took more than three months to complete.

Each canvas is stretched by hand rather than purchased pre-stretched, making the construction of the canvas part of my creative process. Thousands of individual brushstrokes build the depth, movement and atmosphere of the finished work.

Dawn of the Liquid Sky is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting. No prints, copies or limited editions have been produced. The artwork is signed and dated on the back.
