Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #32
Abstract Figures in Landscape #32 is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell, created on a single hand-stretched canvas.
The painting explores the relationship between landscape and figurative forms through color, line, space, and gravity. Saturated earth colors, expressive brushwork, shapes, lines, and flowing drips create movement across the canvas, while subtle figures emerge within the abstract landscape.
This painting took four months to complete. I began with a blank canvas, applying black paint at the top and allowing gravity to pull the paint downward in long drips. From that starting point, the composition gradually developed through layers of oil paint and changes made directly on the canvas.
I work without preliminary sketches and stretch my own canvas over the wood frame. Using a wide variety of artist brushes, oil colors, and painting mediums, I build glossy and matte surfaces that create variations in depth and texture.
With every brushstroke, I think about the beginnings and endings of a moment—a split second captured through color and movement.
