Abstract Art Oil Painting #40
Abstract Art Oil Painting #40 is an original single-canvas oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Color, line, space, and thousands of individual brushstrokes come together to create movement and depth across the canvas.
I began this painting with a blank canvas and washes of dark blue oil color. Then, I turned the canvas, allowing the color to drip and move across the surface. These flowing marks became the starting point for the composition.
Rather than working from preliminary sketches, I paint in the moment, making changes as the painting develops. I think about the beginning and ending of each moment with every brushstroke while exploring what happens inside, outside, and along the edges of the canvas.
This painting took approximately one month to complete. I stretched the canvas over the wood frame myself rather than using a store-bought canvas. Throughout the painting process, I worked with more than 50 different types and styles of artist brushes and over 100 tubes of oil color.
Layers of oil paint, expressive drips, subtle figurative forms, and changes in color create a sense of movement throughout the composition. Detail views reveal additional variations in color, texture, and brushwork.
There are no prints or limited editions of this painting. It is a one-of-a-kind original artwork, signed and dated on the back.
