Laurie Rubell Abstract Artist
I’m Laurie Rubell, an abstract artist creating bold, expressive, large-scale oil paintings that explore color, movement, line, form, and space.
“I create many of my works across two canvases, joining them as one unified composition.”
This lifelong passion is reflected in every oil painting I create.
My paintings develop intuitively through thousands of brushstrokes and countless layers of oil paint. Each original work evolves over time, blending gestural brushwork with vibrant color, shape, texture, and dynamic energy.
My Abstract Oil Paintings
I work directly on the canvas without preliminary sketches. As a result, each painting develops through an intuitive process of adding, removing, layering, and responding to what appears on the canvas.
Color, line, form, and space are central to my work. In addition, subtle figurative and landscape elements sometimes emerge within the abstraction. These forms are not planned. Instead, I allow them to develop naturally as the painting evolves.
My paintings are bold and introspective. Although each work begins differently, I continue painting until the many layers, marks, and brushstrokes become one complete composition.
Two Canvases, One Painting
Many of my paintings are diptychs—two canvases painted as a single work. This approach allows me to explore boundaries, edges, space, and what lies beyond them.
The space between the canvases also becomes part of the painting. Therefore, changing the distance between the two panels can subtly change the relationship between them.
Although these paintings are designed to hang together, many can also be displayed separately.
Original, One-of-a-Kind Artwork
I never create copies or limited editions. Every painting is an entirely original work that reflects my personal and continually evolving artistic vision.
I hand-stretch my canvases and work in oil paint, building the surface through many layers. Because the process is intuitive, no two paintings could ever be exactly alike.
As I often say:
“I cannot remember a time when I didn’t interpret the world through a paintbrush and tubes of oil paint.”
Laurie Rubell Abstract Artist — Background & Exhibitions
Originally from New York, I earned my B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City after attending the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School.
I had my first solo exhibition in New York and have since exhibited my work in galleries in New Jersey, Washington, Philadelphia, and Richmond, as well as through curated online exhibitions.
Throughout my career, my artistic philosophy has remained simple: keep pushing creative boundaries and remain open to where the painting leads.
I’m now based in Glen Allen, Virginia, near Richmond, and my original abstract oil paintings are available to collectors worldwide.
