Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #1
Abstract Figures in Landscape #1 is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell, created on a single hand-stretched canvas.
In a split moment of time, figures emerge within an abstract landscape through layers of color, line, space, and movement. I think about the beginnings and endings of a moment with every brushstroke, allowing the imagery to develop and change as I paint.
I began this painting with a blank canvas, applying black oil paint at the top and allowing gravity to pull the color downward in long drips. From that starting point, I gradually built the composition with layers of thinly applied oil paint, saturated color, shapes, lines, and thousands of brushstrokes.
I work without preliminary sketches and stretch my own canvas over the wood frame. Using more than fifty types and styles of artist brushes, a wide range of oil colors, and painting mediums, I build transparent layers that create variations in depth, color, and surface.
This painting took two months to complete. Glossy and matte areas interact across the canvas, while drips, expressive brushwork, and subtle figurative forms create movement within the abstract landscape.
Abstract Figures in Landscape #1 is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting. I do not create prints, copies, or limited editions of my work.
