Explore original two-panel abstract oil paintings by contemporary artist Laurie Rubell. I create each diptych across two individual canvases, bringing them together as one composition.

Working Across Two Canvases

Working across two canvases allows me to explore both the inside and outside of the edges. Color, line and space move from one canvas to the next. As a result, the composition connects both panels with the space around them.

Although I design these paintings to hang together, you can also display many of them separately. For example, placing the canvases farther apart changes how the forms, colors and lines relate to one another. In this way, the surrounding space becomes part of the viewing experience.

How I Create My Paintings

I begin each painting without preliminary sketches, allowing the work to develop intuitively. First, I apply layers of oil color. Then, I build depth, texture and movement through drips, lines and thousands of individual brushstrokes.

Throughout this process, I use more than fifty types and styles of artist brushes and a wide range of professional oil colors. Some marks remain delicate, while others bring bold color and movement to the surface.

As I paint, abstract forms often merge with hints of figures and landscapes. Shapes emerge, shift and blend into nearby areas of color. Together, these elements allow each composition to develop naturally across both canvases.

One-of-a-Kind Original Artwork

Every diptych in this collection is a one-of-a-kind original. I sign and date each painting on the back. In addition, I offer only original paintings, with no prints, copies or limited editions.
