Flag 83 – Abstract Diptych Oil Painting

Flag 83 is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell, created across two large canvases that form one vivid, unified composition.

I began the painting with washes of deep yellow, gradually building layers of color, movement, and depth across both canvases. As the composition developed, I imagined energized figures swirling through an abstract sky and moving into a landscape of red, blue, and white.

Color, line, and space are central to my work. Thousands of brushstrokes create movement across the two canvases, giving the painting a sense of transition and momentum. I think about the beginning and ending of a moment with each brushstroke, allowing the imagery to emerge and change as I paint.

I work directly on hand-stretched canvas without preliminary sketches. Using a wide variety of artist brushes and oil colors, I build the painting layer by layer and allow the composition to evolve throughout the process.

Flag 83 took more than four months to complete. The two canvases are designed to hang together as one artwork, although they can also be separated to allow the surrounding space to become part of the composition.

This is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting. I do not create reproductions, copies, or limited editions of my work.
