Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #21
Evoking earth and sky, Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #21 is an original two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. The two canvases are designed to hang together as one composition, although they can also be displayed separately.
I paint across both canvases to create one unified artwork, exploring what happens inside, outside, and across the edges. In this painting, dark earth colors move between the canvases while dream-like figures appear in the sky. Color, line, and space connect the two panels and create a sense of movement throughout the composition.
I began with blank canvases and washes of dark blue oil color. Then, I turned the top canvas to allow the color to drip. Those flowing marks became the starting point for the painting and helped guide the direction of the composition.
Rather than working from preliminary sketches, I paint in the moment and make changes as the painting develops. I think about beginnings and endings with every brushstroke, gradually building layers of color, texture, and movement.
This painting took approximately two months to complete. I stretched both canvases over their wood frames myself rather than using store-bought canvases. Throughout the process, I worked with more than 50 different types of artist brushes and many tubes of oil color.
There are no prints or limited editions of this painting. It is a one-of-a-kind original artwork, signed and dated on the back.
