Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #17 is a one-of-a-kind original two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. This use of two canvases became an important direction in my later work, allowing color, line, and movement to continue beyond the boundaries of a single canvas.

The two canvases are designed to hang together as one unified composition, although they may also be displayed separately. Each canvas measures 30 x 66 inches, creating a large-scale artwork with a strong visual presence.

This painting took approximately two months to complete. I began on the bottom canvas with washes of yellow, white, orange, and red oil color. From there, I allowed the colors to flow into the top canvas, creating a continuous field of color and movement across the two surfaces.

I work without preliminary sketches, developing the composition directly as I paint. Thousands of brushstrokes gradually build the relationships between color, line, space, and abstract figurative forms. I hand-stretch each canvas over its wood frame and work with more than 50 styles of artist brushes and over 100 tubes of oil paint.
