Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #18 is a one-of-a-kind original two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Across the two canvases, dark earth tones, shades of red, expressive lines, and abstract forms create a composition filled with movement and depth.
The two canvases are designed to hang together as one unified artwork, although they may also be displayed separately. Each canvas measures 24 x 66 inches, creating a large-scale composition when shown together.
This painting took approximately three months to complete. I began with blank canvases, building the surface with repeated washes of dark earth tones. I mixed pigment with thinner to stain the canvas, then developed the composition with drips of color, earthen shapes, lines, and varying shades of red.
I work without preliminary sketches, making changes directly on the canvas as the painting develops. I think about beginnings and endings with every brushstroke, exploring color, line, space, and what happens both within and beyond the edges of the canvases.
I hand-stretch each canvas over its wood frame rather than using store-bought pre-primed canvas. Throughout my painting process, I work with more than 50 styles of artist brushes and over 100 tubes of oil paint, gradually building layers of color, texture, and movement.
