Description

Abstract Landscape, Oil Painting #15 is a one-of-a-kind, two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. The composition moves across both canvases through layered color, expressive lines, abstract figures, and shifting landscape forms.

The two canvases are designed to hang together as one unified artwork, although they may also be displayed separately. Each canvas measures 29 x 40 inches, creating a substantial composition when the two panels are shown together.

I created this painting over approximately one month, beginning with washes of brown and orange oil color. I work without preliminary sketches, developing the composition directly on the canvas and making changes as I paint. Thousands of individual brushstrokes gradually build the movement, depth, and relationships between color, line, and space.

I hand-stretch each canvas over its wood frame rather than using store-bought pre-primed canvas. During my painting process, I work with more than 50 styles of artist brushes and over 100 tubes of oil paint. Above the suggestion of clouds, figures and shapes appear to move and merge within the abstract landscape.
