Description

Abstract Oil Painting #14 is an original two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Light divides and separates within an evening landscape, while dark shades of blue and black, flowing lines and drips create movement across the composition.

The two canvases are designed to hang together as one artwork, although they may also be displayed separately. Painting across multiple canvases allows me to explore the inside and outside of the edges. Through color, line and space, I think about the starts and endings of each moment as the painting develops.

This painting took approximately two months to complete. I began with blank, hand-stretched canvases and washes of dark blue and black oil color. I turned the right canvas to allow the paint to drip naturally, establishing the beginning of the composition.

I work directly on the canvas without preliminary sketches. As the painting developed, thousands of brushstrokes, drips, shapes and lines gradually built the surface. My process uses more than fifty different sizes and styles of artist brushes and a palette drawn from more than one hundred tubes of oil color.

Each painting is a one-of-a-kind original. I do not create prints or limited editions.
