Under Autumn Ashes in Pompeii – Abstract Oil Painting by Laurie Rubell

Titled Under Autumn Ashes in Pompeii, this original abstract oil painting  is a striking two-canvas composition.

As each canvas measures 40 x 29 inches, and together they form a unified piece measuring 40 x 58 inches.

 While designed to be displayed as one, the canvases may also be hung apart for a more dynamic and spatial effect.

Specifically I paint across two Canvases to create one unique vivid artwork.

 To begin, I hand-stretched raw canvas over a  wood frame.

In fact no preliminary sketches were made 

As I paint live in the moment.

In addition,I approached the blank surfaces with washes of dark blue oil paint.

While  I turned the right-side canvas to let the paint drip organically—

Then this moment became the true starting point of the painting.

 Over the course of four months, I continued building the composition using many  tubes of oil paint and over 50 different artists  brushes.

As a result, line, shape, and color interact with depth and energy throughout the piece.

 Furthermore, my approach to abstract figurative painting is all about intention.

As I consider the beginning and ending of each moment with every brushstroke.

And my oil paintings contain thousands of brushstrokes.

Then gradually , abstract forms, figures, and shades of blue began to emerge—revealing a layered and vivid modern landscape.

 Importantly, this is an original work of art—no reproductions or limited editions exist.

Also,this oil painting is signed and dated on the back,

with detailed close-up photos reveal its texture, brushwork, and depth of color.
