Abstract Figures in Landscape Oil Painting #9 is an original two-canvas abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. The two canvases are designed to hang together as one composition, although they may also be displayed separately.

Creating paintings across multiple canvases allows me to explore the inside and outside of the edges. Through color, line and space, I think about the starts and endings of each moment as the painting develops.

This artwork took approximately two months to complete. I began with blank, hand-stretched canvases and washes of orange and yellow oil color. On the upper canvas, I allowed the washes to drip naturally, establishing the beginning of the composition. Layers of blue, shapes, lines and additional drips gradually developed across the work.

I paint directly on the canvas without preliminary sketches, using more than fifty different sizes and styles of artist brushes and a palette drawn from more than one hundred tubes of oil color.

Each painting is a one-of-a-kind original. I do not create prints or limited editions.
