Original Abstract Figurative Landscape Oil Painting #38
Abstract Figurative Landscape Oil Painting #38 is an original two-canvas oil painting by Laurie Rubell, combining abstract expression with subtle figurative imagery.
The two canvases were created to hang together as one composition, although they may also be displayed separately. I paint across both canvases, exploring the inside and outside of their edges while allowing color, line, and space to connect the entire work.
I work directly on the canvas without preliminary sketches, making changes as the painting develops. This piece began with washes of light shades of blue across the blank canvases. From there, layers of oil paint and thousands of individual brushstrokes gradually formed the composition.
Within the abstract landscape, a figure appears elevated by a loop of light, adding a subtle figurative presence to the surrounding movement and color.
The painting took approximately two months to complete. I used more than 50 different styles of artist brushes and a wide range of oil colors throughout the process. I also stretch my own canvases over wood frames rather than working on store-bought pre-primed canvas.
Color, line, and space are central to my work. With every brushstroke, I think about beginnings and endings and the moment that exists between them.
This is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting. I do not create prints, copies, or limited editions of my paintings.
