“Abstract Black and White Oil Painting #13” is an Original Fine Art work by Laurie Rubell, a contemporary abstract artist based in Glen Allen, Virginia.
This powerful single-canvas work measures 50” x 64” x 1.5” and is hand-stretched over a wooden frame—never pre-made or store-bought.
To start, I applied thick black oil paint across the top of the raw canvas, allowing it to drip freely.
While the paint flowed, I used my brush to guide its path—creating expressive lines and organic shadows.
As a result, this abstract black and white painting becomes a visual map, evoking stars and celestial movement in a monochromatic landscape.
Because I don’t use preliminary sketches, each brushstroke is spontaneous and in real time.
For example,I think about the start and end of any moment with every brushstroke.
In fact, this piece took two weeks to complete as I worked and reworked lines directly on the canvas.
I used several different artists brushes and shades of black and white oil paint to build layers of depth and motion.
Furthermore, this painting reflects my creative style, where abstract landscapes and figurative forms merge.
As the black and white tones blend into subtle shades of grey, revealing how the absence of color can still radiate energy and emotion.
Most Importantly, I do not make prints or reproductions.
