Abstract Black and White Oil Painting #13 is an original fine art work by Laurie Rubell, a contemporary abstract artist based in Glen Allen, Virginia.

This powerful single-canvas oil painting measures 50 × 64 × 1.5 inches. I hand-stretched the canvas over a wooden frame rather than using a pre-made, store-bought canvas.

Creating the Black and White Composition

I began by applying thick black oil paint across the top of the raw canvas and allowing it to drip freely. As the paint flowed, I used my brush to guide its path, creating expressive lines, organic shadows, and a sense of movement.

As a result, the abstract black and white composition becomes a visual map, evoking stars and celestial movement within a monochromatic landscape.

Painting Without Preliminary Sketches

I work without preliminary sketches, so each brushstroke develops spontaneously and in real time. With every brushstroke, I think about the start and end of a moment and how one movement leads into the next.

In addition, I continually work and rework the lines directly on the canvas. 

This painting took approximately two weeks to complete. During that time, I used several different artist brushes. In addition, I used shades of black and white oil paint to build depth, texture, and motion.

Abstract Landscape and Figurative Forms

Although the painting is entirely monochromatic, it reflects my creative style in which abstract landscapes and subtle figurative forms merge. 

Black and white tones blend into shades of grey. Even without color, the painting creates energy, movement, and emotion.

Ultimately, motion completes the painting, creating a visual map of black and white forms reminiscent of stars moving through space.
