Ascending Landscape – Modern Abstract Oil Painting

Ascending Landscape is a one-of-a-kind modern abstract oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Measuring 66” × 38” × 1.5”, this large original painting explores the relationship between color, line, space and movement.

I began with raw canvas, applying thick blue oil paint across the upper portion and allowing it to drip naturally. As the paint moved downward, I used a variety of brushes to guide the drips and develop abstract shapes and subtle figurative forms.

Created without preliminary sketches, the painting evolved intuitively over several months. Colors, lines and spatial relationships changed continuously as I worked directly on the canvas. Multiple thin glazes of oil paint and different painting mediums gradually created depth, texture and luminous color.

Above the horizon, cool blue tones transition into a vivid abstract landscape. Vertical trails of paint, layered colors and emerging forms create a sense of movement while suggesting an imagined landscape that is continually changing.

I hand-stretched the canvas over its wooden frame rather than using a store-bought, pre-stretched canvas. Every stage of the painting developed as part of the creative process, from the first application of color to the final brushstrokes.
