Abstract Figure in Landscape Oil Painting #5 is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Saturated earth colors, layered brushwork, flowing lines and dramatic drips create a sense of movement across the canvas. Within the abstract landscape, a figure appears to reach toward or hold onto pouring rays of light.

This painting took approximately three weeks to complete. I began with washes of dark oil color and gradually built the surface using more than fifty different sizes and styles of artist brushes. I also used the ends of brush handles to create additional marks and textures.

The rays of light were created by pouring oil paint from the top of the canvas and allowing gravity to move the paint naturally across the surface. This use of color, line, space and gravity is an important part of my painting process.

I stretch my own canvas over wooden stretcher bars rather than using store-bought artist canvas. Each painting develops directly on the canvas without being reproduced as a print or limited edition.
