Abstract Art Oil Painting #8 is an original oil painting by Laurie Rubell that explores the contrast between darkness and light. Drips of dark color form abstract shapes across the canvas, while areas of light emerge through the composition and illuminate the darkened landscape.

This single-canvas painting took approximately one month to complete. I began by hand-stretching the canvas over a wooden frame and worked directly on the surface without preliminary sketches. The painting changed continuously as layers of color, lines, drips and thousands of individual brushstrokes developed across the canvas.

My painting process uses more than fifty different sizes and styles of artist brushes and a palette drawn from more than one hundred tubes of oil color. Through color, line and space, I explore movement, changing edges and the beginning and ending of each moment within a painting.

Each of my paintings is a one-of-a-kind original. I do not create prints or limited editions.
