Abstract Figures in Landscape, Oil Painting #19 is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell. Created on a single hand-stretched canvas, the painting combines color, lines, shapes, drips, and thousands of individual brushstrokes to form a vibrant, cosmic abstract landscape.

I began this painting with a blank canvas and applied black oil paint along the top, allowing gravity to pull the paint downward. These first drips became the starting point for the composition. From there, I gradually built layers of color, shapes, and lines, allowing the painting to change and develop as I worked.

Rather than beginning with sketches, I paint in the moment and make decisions directly on the canvas. I think about the beginning and ending of each moment with every brushstroke. As a result, subtle figurative forms appear within the abstract landscape, creating a sense of movement and discovery.

This painting took approximately two months to complete. I stretched the canvas over the wood frame myself rather than using a store-bought canvas. Throughout the painting process, I worked with more than 50 styles of artist brushes and over 100 tubes of oil color. Glossy and matte surfaces, layered color, and expressive drips add depth and texture to the finished artwork.

There are no prints or limited editions of this painting. It is a one-of-a-kind original artwork, signed and dated on the back.
