Abstract the Warm Evening Sky is an original abstract figurative oil painting by Laurie Rubell, created across two hand-stretched canvases. Designed to hang together as one composition, the canvases can also be separated for a different presentation.

Color, line and space move continuously across the two canvases. Shades of blue merge with layered lines, shapes and subtle figurative forms, while drips of oil paint become part of the movement of the composition.

This painting took four months to complete. I began with blank canvases and washes of dark blue oil color, gradually building the surface without preliminary sketches. I paint intuitively, making changes directly on the canvas as the work develops.

My process begins with stretching each canvas by hand over its wood frame rather than using store-bought, pre-stretched canvas. I work with more than fifty types of artist brushes and a large range of oil colors to create layers, depth and movement.

Abstract the Warm Evening Sky is a one-of-a-kind original work of art. I do not create copies or limited editions of my paintings.
